What Do We Do When Addiction Causes Conflict in the Family

Alma Chapter 5: 7-9 Behold, he changed their hearts; yea, he awakened them out of a deep sleep, and they awoke unto God. Behold, they were in the midst of darkness; nevertheless, their souls were illuminated by the light of the everlasting word; yea, they were encircled about by the abands of death, and the chains of hell, and an everlasting destruction did await them. And now I ask of you, my brethren, were they destroyed? Behold, I say unto you, Nay, they were not. And again I ask, were the bands of death broken, and the chains of hell which encircled them about, were they loosed? I say unto you, Yea, they were loosed, and their souls did expand, and they did sing redeeming love. And I say unto you that they are saved.

I started this blog to help others.  I wanted to give them a point of reference or a place to come and see that they are not alone in dealing with family suffering from the conflict that comes addiction in the family.

When you have someone in your family that isn’t living a life that promotes happiness and good feelings and security, you need someone in your life that does.

I have always wanted to be that light.

I don’t want to be this light for myself so much, as the light I have in my heart, just can’t be contained.  It brings me such comfort and insight and peace in a world, where I find just the opposite. Continue reading What Do We Do When Addiction Causes Conflict in the Family

What Would Jesus Want for His Birthday?

Video of service and performed by Marvin Goldstein and John Canaan
“Because I Have Been Given Much” Video performed by Marvin Goldstein and John Canaan and features pictures of giving service to those in need.

As we come around to the winter holidays, I have been doing a little reflection. I wanted to understand…..What would Jesus want for a birthday present?

I mean, He gave His everything so that we could return home to our heavenly father free of the sins of this world.  What does He ask of us?

Well, He asks us to follow his example and strive to be more like him.

There is example after example of Jesus serving others.  He did not do this work with a bitter heart, but a heart filled with love and compassion.   Can we do any less?

Work Builds Self Worth

Steve Closs a man who never gives
Steve Closs a man who never gives

My brother has a brain injury.  In his 59 years of life, he has had to create ways to support his family and himself.  He has had to overcome his injury and be creative.

He was only in the 7th grade when his brain issue was discovered.  He has had severe seizures and several brain surgeries that have added to his damage and now he is in full dementia.

My brother has no short or long term memory.  He is bored.  He has never been one to sit idle, but now that he can not remember what he is doing or how, he sits in front of a tv and does nothing but sink into depression.  He doesn’t know why he is where he is and wants to do anything other than watch tv.  Then he forgets what he wants to do.  It is a horrible thing to watch and painful to know that he just wants to be productive.

What my brother needs is work. Continue reading Work Builds Self Worth

Youth Vid
Youth Vid

My Class today started with watching this video that was created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  It is used to help strengthen the youth and allow them to see that know matter what the problems are in your life, if you let Christ into your heart, you will be better able to handle them.

I have been working on my “Becoming Project” now for 7 weeks.  I set the goal to be more “Forgiving like Christ”.  It has been an amazing journey of discovery and release.

I have discovered that by working on this goal, I am letting Christ deeper into my heart.  He has helped me to let go of the bitterness and anger that hold my pain in and caused me such misery.
